We Energies – Biomass Fueled Cogeneration Facility
We Energies’ Rothschild facility serves as a model of effective energy recycling. It uses cogeneration, or combined heat and power, to simultaneously generate electricity and heat. Low-value woods procured locally along with sawmill residue and paper mill waste are used as fuel sources to produce electricity while reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
The project also serves as an example of what Boldt’s Integrated Lean Project Delivery® (ILPD) process can accomplish. In our role as construction manager and general contractor, we worked with the Poyry Group to collaboratively design, construct and commission the facility.
Boldt also self-performed key scopes of work, including more than 17,000 cubic yards of concrete installation, 5,500 tons of steel erection and major equipment setting. Boiler and pressure part erection and welding, small and large bore piping, and the erection of the steam turbine and generator were also completed by Boldt’s tradespeople.

Project Highlights
- The cogeneration process is a more efficient use of the energy contained in the wood fuel, compared to producing electricity or steam in separate processes.
- The Integrated Lean Project Delivery process produces a clear definition of project goals with strong leadership at the early stages of design and construction and acts as a compass for all decision making throughout the project.
