UCSF Research and Academic Building Reaches Construction Milestone

A construction milestone was reached when the structural steel framework was recently completed for the new 5-story, 175,000 sq. ft. Research and Academic Building located on the Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center Campus. The building is a true design-build project with The Boldt Company as the Design Builder and an outside firm as the Design Partner.

When finished, the facility will contain a mix of research, teaching and administrative space that will match the caliber of care and innovation provided at ZSFG. Putting this research together in a modern, highly functional facility will help to improve outcomes.

Now that the steel structure is complete, attention has turned to building out the inside space and creating the state-of-the-art research and academic building that will support the UCSF research community. Putting research and academics together in a modern, highly functional facility will help to improve the quality of their research.

Lean Tools
For the UCSF RAB at ZSFG project Boldt started using Lean tools in the procurement process for choosing our design/build trade partners who were all chosen using “Best Value” selection. They used Choosing By Advantages to select the structural system and exterior enclosure system for the building. Boldt uses A3-thinking for decision making for anything that differs from the basis of design to selecting options for equipment. The in-house Boldt Lean trainers held regular training sessions for items such as Choosing By Advantages, A3 Thinking, Reliable Promising and developing the project’s True North as the team was developed and continue update trainings to this day to ensure all subcontractors that onboard later in the project have the tools to help the team succeed.

Once the new research and academic building is completed, the San Francisco community—and beyond, will benefit in real time with the best that science has to offer. Construction began in August 2020 and is scheduled to continue through early 2023.
