WE Energies – Glacier Hills Wind Park
Glacier Hills Wind Park generates enough electricity to power 45,000 typical homes in a year. The wind farm has 90 Vestas V90 turbines, which have a hub height of 80 meters. Each turbine produces 1.8 MW of electric power.
Boldt’s work included the construction of all foundations, erection of the towers and wind turbine installations. Each foundation consisted of 365 yards of concrete completed in three separate pours. Ironworkers placed over 24 tons of rebar in each foundation, totaling 2,160 tons for the project. A temporary concrete batch plant was set up in a nearby rock quarry to support the 35,000-plus yards of concrete needed for the project.
This wind farm was constructed without use of the usual crane paths between tower locations. Utilizing existing roads, a Liebherr 11,200 mobile truck crane was used as the main erection crane. Critical lifts included the placement 110-ton Nacelles/hub assembly. To support the equipment offloading and erection, Boldt operated a fleet of cranes onsite ranging from 45 tons to 550 tons.
